The five values
Commitment to the goal rather than to a fixed list of tasks; focus on the sprint work; openness about progress and obstacles; respect for people’s skills and constraints; courage to raise problems and to say when something will not fit.
Why they are not decoration
Every scrum ceremony assumes them. A retrospective without openness produces nothing; a planning without courage produces over-commitment; a review without respect turns into a trial. Teams that struggle with scrum usually struggle with a value, not with a ritual.
