What is a PMO (Project Management Office)?

The PMO is the team that defines standards, governance and visibility to deliver projects consistently across the organisation.

A Project Management Office (PMO) is the team or function that defines and maintains project management standards across an organisation. It is the guardian of methodology, governance and portfolio visibility.

What a PMO does

A PMO sets the project methodology and templates, consolidates portfolio reporting, oversees governance and prioritisation, manages shared resources and capacity, and supports project managers with tools, coaching and best practices.

The types of PMO

A supportive PMO provides templates and expertise on demand; a controlling PMO enforces standards and compliance; a directive PMO manages the projects itself. Many organisations sit somewhere in between.

Why it matters

Without a PMO, each project runs its own way — reporting is inconsistent, resources collide and leadership lacks a consolidated view. A PMO brings standardisation, comparable data and a single source of truth for decision-making.

PMO vs. project manager

A project manager delivers a single project; the PMO works across all of them — setting the rules of the game, arbitrating between projects and giving leadership the portfolio-level picture.
