What is agile project management?

Agile delivers work in short, iterative cycles, adapting to change instead of following a fixed upfront plan.

Agile project management is an iterative approach that delivers work in small, incremental cycles rather than a single, sequential plan. It prioritises adaptability, continuous feedback and collaboration over rigid upfront planning.

The agile mindset

Born from the 2001 Agile Manifesto, agile values individuals and interactions, working software, customer collaboration and responding to change. Requirements and deliverables evolve as the team learns.

How it works

Work is broken into small units delivered in short iterations (sprints). Each cycle produces a usable increment, is reviewed with stakeholders, and feeds improvements into the next — so priorities can shift without derailing the project.

Agile vs. waterfall

Waterfall plans everything upfront and moves through phases in sequence; agile embraces change and delivers value incrementally. Many organisations blend the two into hybrid approaches depending on the project.

Popular frameworks

Scrum (sprints, roles and ceremonies) and Kanban (continuous flow and work-in-progress limits) are the most widely used agile frameworks.

Agile with FoxPlan

FoxPlan supports agile delivery with Kanban boards, task priorities and real-time progress — while keeping planning, budgets and resources visible at the portfolio level.
